COQUI is a type of frog that lives in Puerto Rico, North America. It is one of the loudest amphibians known in the world. According to records, their calls can reach 100 decibels. The name COQUI comes from its call, and only male frogs make this call. Their call is clearly divided into two parts: “Co” and “Qui”. Biologists have found that these two parts seem to have different meanings, as other male frogs only respond to the “Co” part, while female frogs are only attracted to the “Qui” part of the call. In their native Puerto Rico, this frog is considered a natural heritage of the island.
